Here is the set of deaths involving I269 “Pulmonary embolism without mention of acute cor pulmonale” from 2015 through 2021: { 707, 642, 707, 687, 730, 887, 1,011 }.

What is a pulmonary embolism (PE). Simply put, someone had a clot that likely began elsewhere (perhaps in a deep vein in the calf muscle), but traveled to a lung and maybe killed the person or began a process by which the person ended up in the death certificate database.

One 52yo female decedent appeared to be a head trauma death. And she did die from head trauma. She fell in a parking lot where she worked. However, on examination, the medical examiner noticed she had a PE, which is highly likely the cause of her loss of consciousness while walking across a parking lot.

Would the decedent have died from the PE? We will never know because she fell and hit her head and died from the head wound. The PE may be considered the actual cause of death or cause-in-fact because she likely would not have lost consciousness and fallen and hit her head and died, but for the PE. The PE may also be considered a proximate or legal cause of death because a reasonable person would reasonably foresee that a PE would cause the chain of events leading to death and that the chain is not so attenuated in time or cascade of events that another intervening cause would relieve the PE from being the root cause without which the death would not have occurred. That’s a mouthful.

What is this article about? The impact of a sharp rise in PE deaths, apparent by that simple set of data in which 2021 had 1,011 deaths involving PE’s (way more than the year of C19 in 2020), is felt not only by the person who died, but by all of society.
